BACOLOD CITY – A 58-year-old man became a widower after his wife was killed when their motorcycle was sideswiped by a dump truck in Zone 1, Barangay Hilamonan, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on their way to attend a friend’s burial Thursday.
Police identified the fatality as Maria, 49, of the same village.
Police Lt. Col. Roberto Indiape Jr., chief of the Kabankalan City Police Station, said the couple and the 49-year-old truck driver were traveling in the same direction toward Barangay 1 when the dump truck overtook and sideswiped the motorcycle past noon.
The victim fell from the motorcycle and was thrown under the truck, which ran over her.
She suffered severe head injuries and was declared dead at a hospital.
Her husband was unhurt.
Indiape said both parties reached an initial settlement after the truck owner extended assistance to the victim’s family.
The truck driver was released from police custody Friday morning, he added.
Farmer Hacked Dead Over Carabao Dispute
A 49-year-old farmer was allegedly hacked to death by another farmer following a heated altercation over a carabao in Purok Cabarles, Barangay Damsite, Murcia town, on Monday.
Police Capt. Honey Labaro, deputy chief of the Murcia Municipal Police Station, said the suspect, identified as 38-year-old “Marlon,” approached the victim, identified as “Francisco,” who was tying a carabao in a vacant lot where a banana tree was planted.
Labaro said the suspect was concerned the carabao might reach the banana tree.
Both men claimed ownership of the tree, which led to an argument.
The suspect allegedly pulled a bolo from his waist and hacked the victim in the back of the head and neck.
The victim was declared dead at a hospital.
Labaro said the suspect was later arrested at his residence in Barangay Cansilayan, Murcia town.
He added that the two had no prior disputes and that it was their first argument that led to violence.
Police filed homicide charges against the suspect Tuesday.
