The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is continuously widening the Iloilo-Capiz Road (Old Route), one of the major routes from Iloilo City to Capiz and neighboring province of Aklan, breathing new life into one of Panay Island’s historic travel corridors.
Recently, DPWH Capiz 2nd District Engineering Office has completed the widening along Barangay Duran in Dumalag, Capiz. The ₱87.2-million involved the widening of 1.5-kilometer stretch carriageway. It also includes slope protection, paved shoulders, cross drains, guardrails, solar-powered street lights, and pavement markers.
Citing from the report of OIC-District Engineer Gerardo G. Parra Jr., DPWH 6 OIC-Regional Director Jose Al V. Fruto said this road widening will reduce head-on collisions, allow safer overtaking, and prepare the road for increased traffic in the years ahead.
“This road expansion helps protect lives and supports local trade by making travel safer and more efficient. It also prepares the area for future growth as more vehicles use this route,” Director Fruto explained.
In addition, DE Parra noted that this is a vital road network connecting Capiz to Iloilo through the towns of Dao, Cuartero, Dumalag, and Tapaz; hence, its widening is beneficial among motorists, travelers and all forms of road users, as well as people in the area.
“The improved section shortens travel time to central Iloilo and allows smoother movement of goods and passengers, including those bound for Luzon via roll-on/roll-off buses,” DE Parra emphasized.
DE Parra added that this project also supports tourism and daily commutes, offering a smoother experience for residents and visitors. (DPWH-6)
