Weaving Southeast Asia’s Tapestry: The Philippines’ Integral Role in Exploring Culture, History, and Religions

The main theme of the conference aims to position the Philippines as a pivotal point in the study of Southeast Asia. As a diverse country with a rich cultural heritage, the Philippines offers a unique perspective on the broader Southeast Asian context.

The theme aims to shed light on the country’s significant contributions to understanding culture, history, and religions.

We invite papers that focus on the Philippines and within the broader Southeast Asian narrative, enriching our understanding of the interconnectedness and shared heritage of this vibrant region.

Sub-themes:

• Philippine Contemporary Issues and Future Perspectives – This sub-theme will address contemporary challenges and opportunities in the study of the Philippines within Southeast Asia. Paper presentations may focus on issues such as globalization, cultural preservation, heritage management, social change, and the future trajectories of Philippine-Southeast Asian relations.
• Art, Literature, and Performance – This sub-theme will examine the artistic expressions, literary traditions, and performing arts of the Philippines in Southeast Asian cultural production. Paper presentations may discuss visual arts, literature, theater, music, dance, and how artistic practices reflect regional influences.
• Survey on Oral Traditions and Linguistic Diversity – This sub-theme will explore the linguistic diversity of the Philippines and its connections to Southeast Asian languages. Paper presentations may discuss language families, language contact, oral traditions, folklore, and the role of language in cultural identity.
• Cultural Exchanges and Interactions – This sub-theme will delve into the cultural exchanges, influences, and shared traditions between the Philippines and other Southeast Asian nations. Paper presentations may include language, arts, music, dance, material culture, food/cuisine, and other aspects of cultural heritage.
• Historical narratives of the Philippines in Southeast Asia. This sub-theme will explore the Philippines’ place within Southeast Asian History. Paper presentations may discuss the pre-colonial era, maritime trade networks, regional empires, colonial influences, and the Philippines’ interactions with other Southeast Asian states.

1 § Religious Dynamics in Southeast Asia – This sub-theme will focus on the religious landscape of the Philippines and its connection within the broader Southeast Asian context. Paper presentations may address indigenous belief systems, the spread, and adaptation of major religions, syncretism, religious practices, and interreligious dialogue.

This conference seeks to bring together scholars, researchers, educators, and cultural practitioners, from diverse disciplines to explore and uncover the multifaceted dimensions of Philippine culture, history, and religious practices within the broader Southeast Asian framework.

Conference Format:

The conference will feature a diverse range of activities, including keynote speeches, panel discussions, and paper presentations. We encourage scholars, researchers, educators, cultural practitioners, and community members to submit abstracts for paper presentations, or panel proposals. Additionally, we will organize site visits and cultural excursions to significant historical and cultural sites within the City of Manila.

Publication Opportunities:

Selected conference papers will have the opportunity to be published in a dedicated volume (10^th anniversary book project) and in PASCHR Journal. We also aim to collaborate with publishers, cultural institutions, and online platforms to create digital resources that highlight the Philippines’ unique position within Southeast Asia.
