A wanted man who had been eluding authorities for almost three decades was killed after he allegedly put up a fight with police in Maasin, Iloilo early morning of July 9, 2020.
Julio Afra, a resident of Barangay Linab, Maasin, Iloilo, died at the Ramon Tabiana Memorial District Hospital in Cabatuan town.
Members of Maasin Police Station and the Regional Mobile Force Battakion 6 (RFMB-6) served an arrest warrant against the suspect for murder.
Police Major Fernand Limbungan, Maasin police chief, said their record indicated that the murder incident happened in 1991.
“We were informed that he’s been implicated in other incidents,” Limbungan said but did not elaborate.
Limbungan said Afra was preparing to go to the piggery where he was working when they arrived.
“When he saw uniformed policemen, he immediately ran to the back portion of the house,” Limbungan said.
But unknown to the suspect, the area at the back was also blocked off by police.
Armed with a bolo, Afra allegedly attempted to hack one of the police operatives.
A policeman then shot him on the right arm. But the bullet penetrated his chest area.
The suspect was still able to walk until he was accosted and brought to the police car.
“That’s why, we were also surprised when the doctors declared him dead,” Limbungan said.
He insisted, though, that they used necessary force to stop Afra.
