Visa contactless payments are now live across all MRT-3 stations, offering more than 350,000 daily commuters a faster, safer, and fully cashless fare payment option.
Starting today, passengers can tap their Visa credit, debit, or prepaid cards—or Visa-enabled mobile devices—directly at station turnstiles to pay for rides.
The rollout supports the Philippines’ transition to open-loop transit systems and was made possible through Visa’s partnership with the Department of Transportation and GCash.
“We’re proud to bring Visa contactless payments to MRT-3 and help modernize everyday commuting for millions of Filipinos,” said Jeff Navarro, Visa Philippines country manager.
“This marks a significant step in building a more connected, cashless future for public transport in the Philippines,” he said.
“Through our partnership with the Department of Transportation and GCash, we’re enabling faster, safer, and more seamless journeys for commuters across Metro Manila,” Navarro added.
The new system aims to eliminate the need for separate train cards or long queues at ticket booths, offering commuters greater flexibility and speed.
An open-loop system allows riders to use any eligible contactless payment method—not just proprietary transit cards—making it more convenient for both locals and tourists.
Visa’s expansion into public transportation aligns with the Marcos administration’s push to modernize infrastructure and increase digital adoption across sectors.
MRT-3, which runs along EDSA from North Avenue to Taft Avenue, serves as a critical backbone of Metro Manila’s daily commuter network.
Visa said the move also supports its broader mission of making digital payments more accessible in everyday life.
