Village watchman killed in Calatrava, insurgency link probed

BACOLOD CITY – Police are investigating whether the shooting death of a village watchman in Calatrava, Negros Occidental, last Saturday might be connected to insurgency.

Police Major Ronald Santillan, the town’s police chief, reported that Alexander Alquizar, 54, was tending to his farm in Barangay Laga-an when he was approached by unidentified gunmen around 5:30 a.m.

According to Santillan, after a brief interaction, likely to confirm his identity, shots were fired. Alquizar’s wife witnessed the assailants shooting her husband from a distance, he said.

Alquizar died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Santillan noted that Alquizar had not informed his family of any prior threats. The investigation is ongoing.
