Six persons, including a barangay official, were arrested after they were caught placing bets for spider fighting at Dumangas, Iloilo afternoon of Oct. 17, 2019.
Police identified the suspects as Barangay Kagawad Lucky Dagolgol, 31, of Calao village, Dumangas; Domingo Solidarios, 38, of Barangay Inagdangan Sur, Zarraga; Hian Radan Dillo, 32, of Barangay PD Monfort North, Dumangas; Juen Sotic, 33, of Poblacion Ilawod, Zarraga; Felmo Deloso, 54, of Jardin, Dumangas; and Ralph Allan Cezar, 23, of PD Monfort, Dumangas.
Police Major Joven Arevalo, Dumangas police chief, said the suspects were caught placing bets on s spider fight at a rice field in Barangay Bolilao.
Several others players scampered and evaded arrest.
Police recovered 63 spiders placed inside matchboxes and P980 cash.
Arevalo said they will turn over the seizes spiders to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
A case for violation of Presidential Decree 1602, which imposes stiffer penalties for illegal gambling, was filed against the suspects.
Arevalo said an informant tipped them about the suspects’ activity,
There have been efforts to arrest bettors of spider fight but they proved to be slippery.
On Oct. 3, 2019, twenty-two persons were collared after allegedly participating in spider fight at Barangay Guzman-Jesena, Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
