Victor Wembanyama established another record after tallying the fastest double-double in NBA history during the San Antonio Spurs’ 129-114 victory over the Chicago Bulls on March 31, 2026.
In just eight minutes and 31 seconds of on-court time, the 22-year-old franchise player already had 10 points and 10 rebounds, officially inking his name at the start of the second quarter as the newest record-holder for the fastest double-double in league history.
Wembanyama surpassed former St. Louis Hawks player Jim Washington (1966) and Andre Drummond (2022), when he was still playing for the Brooklyn Nets, who both achieved the feat in approximately nine minutes of on-court time.
The versatile center and Most Valuable Player (MVP) candidate then capped off San Antonio’s dominant win with an all-around effort of 41 points on 17-of-27 shooting from the field, 16 rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and a steal.
“Just figuring things out,” Wembanyama said after making history.
“I’m feeling great right now. My shape is increasing right now. I will do whatever it takes. When we are doing everything right, we will have a great shot.”
The Spurs badly needed every bit of that Wembanyama magic after Chicago threatened to pull off an upset with an early eight-point lead in the first quarter.
Disappointed with how complacently San Antonio performed in the first seven minutes of the game, head coach Mitch Johnson called back-to-back emergency timeouts and was visibly upset every time the camera crew panned to his facial expressions on the big replay screens at the Frost Bank Center.
Fortunately, Wembanyama got hot when the Spurs needed his offense the most, spearheading a massive 35-19 turnaround in the second quarter that put San Antonio in a commanding position at the half.
All hell broke loose in the third quarter when San Antonio ballooned its largest lead of the game to 29 points, led by Wembanyama’s paint dominance and Stephon Castle’s timely 3-point shooting.
The most impressive part of Wembanyama’s historic night was that he recorded all those stat lines in just 30 minutes. He could’ve stuffed more, but with San Antonio already holding a huge double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, coach Johnson decided to pull his superstar out with six minutes still left in the game.
“He was in attack mode early in the game. He also did a great job passing the ball,” Johnson praised Wembanyama.
“Wemby wanted to set the tone, which he did. He got to the paint, he got to his spots, and had a good pace offensively. So, he had a big night there.”
Despite already securing a ticket to the NBA Playoffs, San Antonio is still going for the kill, having won its last nine consecutive games, which could further boost its bid to snatch the Oklahoma City Thunder’s No. 1 spot in the Western Conference.
Currently, the Spurs trail the Thunder by three wins, but they will still have a chance to tie or overtake them if they win all of their remaining regular-season games from April 2 to April 13, 2026.
