UST Breaks Ground and Seals a Legacy for Dr. William T. Belo

With the recent event, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) celebrated a momentous occasion with the groundbreaking ceremony of the UST – Dr. William T. Belo Interdisciplinary Research Institute in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, on January 26, 2024.

The UST-Dr. William T. Belo’s Interdisciplinary Research Institute is a pioneering initiative to advance research and foster collaboration across various disciplines. Named after the Wilcon Depot founder and chairman emeritus, Dr. William T. Belo, who is also a philanthropist and advocate for education, the institute is set to become a hub for innovation and breakthroughs.

“The groundbreaking ceremony symbolizes our commitment to advancing research and innovation. The UST – Dr. William T. Belo Interdisciplinary Research Institute will be a beacon of excellence, driving progress and contributing to the global body of knowledge,” said Very Rev. Fr. Jannel Abogado, O.P., DTPS Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at the University of Santo Tomas.

During the ceremony, key figures from the University and the community shared their excitement about the potential impact of the UST – Dr. William T. Belo Interdisciplinary Research Institute. The facility is designed to foster collaboration across areas, bringing together experts from diverse fields to work on interdisciplinary projects that have the potential to shape the future.

The UST – Dr. William T. Belo Interdisciplinary Research Institute is poised to become a landmark institution in Sta.Rosa, Laguna, attracting top researchers, scholars, and students worldwide. The University looks forward to the facility’s completion and the opportunities it will provide for collaborative research and innovation.

“This is no ordinary building but will be a training ground for great discoveries and ideas that are expected to contribute to the transformation and upliftment of our communities and our nation in the world. “ Dr. William Belo said during his speech.

The event also featured a ceremonial capsule laying and soil turning, signifying the official start of construction. Attendees witnessed this historic moment with anticipation for the institute’s transformative impact on research, education, and community engagement.
