The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) library staff completed a three-day training workshop on the new library systems Buklod and Tuklas, titled “Moving Towards a Union Database of Library Resources and Integrated Services: Adopting and Implementing Next-Generation Library Systems Buklod and Tuklas.”
Resource speakers from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) shared expertise through lectures, demonstrations and hands-on activities from Jan. 20 to 22, 2026, at the UPV Archives in the Miagao campus.
The workshop aimed to equip library staff with the skills needed to effectively utilize the new systems, enhancing services and resource management.
On the first day, UPV University Librarian Analiza S. Galang-Linaugo welcomed and introduced the speakers from UPD: Chito N. Angeles, project team leader and head of the Information Technology Division; Michelle Ann G. Manalo-Eclar, head librarian of the Strategic Communication, Research and Marketing Section; Anthony N. Atuel, head librarian of the Cataloging and Metadata Services Section; Elizza Mae L. Jayag, head librarian of the Technology Management Center Library; Katherine S. Nazareth, head librarian of the Serials Section; and Martian A. Jinio, college librarian of the Information Technology Division.
Training began with a lecture on the introduction to Buklod and Tuklas, followed by lecture-demonstrations on effectively searching in Tuklas using its various search features. Participants also took part in hands-on activities focused on cataloging library materials.
Day two covered checking in and checking out of library materials, alongside discussions and demonstrations on inventory management as well as Suri, another feature of Buklod.
On the third day, staff delved into a lecture-demonstration on serials. Question-and-answer sessions were held throughout the three-day training, resulting in the sharing of helpful tips and best practices aimed at enhancing library services.
Angeles expressed his gratitude to the UPV library team for the warm accommodation, to the UP administration for the funding, and to his team for their dedication since 2020. He emphasized the value of working together to improve the library systems.
Tuklas is a resource discovery interface that replaced the Integrated Library System (iLib), the previous online public access catalog, while Buklod is a library services platform that provides a union catalog of library resources. The UP System launched the two platforms as part of its effort to modernize library operations and unify resource access across its constituent universities.
The same training has already been conducted at UP Baguio and UP Cebu, marking a significant step in the UP library system’s commitment to innovation and excellence in information management. (M.N. Taganap)
