UPV joins Western Visayas Laboratory Network

The University of the Philippines Visayas joined five other major research institutions in creating a network of laboratories in Western Visayas.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was inked between DOST VI, UPV, and five other major research institutions last February 16, 2023 at Grand Xing Imperial Hotel, Iloilo City.

UPV was represented by Chancellor Dr. Clement C. Camposano while the other research institutions were represented by the following: Dr. Leobert D. Dela Peña of Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC), Ms. Roselyn C. Usero of Negros Prawn Producers Cooperative (NPPC), Director Ramar Niel V. Pascua of Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environment Management Bureau Region VI, Ms. Jessica C. Esmao of Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, and Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga of the Department of Science and Technology.

Dr. Renato U. Solidum, DOST Secretary also graced the said MOU signing.

Western Visayas Laboratory Network (WVLabNet) was created to streamline laboratory services that are available in the region. This will create harmonious relationships between these laboratories that will ease transactions between industry partners and research institutions.

This is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology Region VI headed by Director Gelonga since laboratory analysis plays a critical role in research and development, enforcement of government policies as well as quality assurance.

Dr. Carmelo Del Castillo, UPV NIMBB director was also present in the said MOU signing. He said that Western Visayas has a lot of potential and outstanding capability in terms of research.

“This is just the start of something bigger for Western Visayas,” he added.

Being part of WV LabNet will enhance the university’s partnerships and strengthen connections with other research institutions in the region. (Ms. Reyna Fe N. Quilantang, OVCRE)
