UP Visayas Technologies are featured awardees in Agham + Sining 2022

The University of the Philippines Visayas technologies – Mussel Glycogen and FILYRO Waste Solutions – were granted the Invention Disclosure Incentive (IDI) Award in Agham + Sining: UP Innovation and Knowledge Festival 2022 last Nov 28, 2022, at the UP Bonifacio Global City (BGC) campus.
The Mussel Glycogen, spearheaded by Dr. Leni Yap-Dejeto from the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of UP Tacloban, was also regarded as one of the best technologies at the ceremony.
The technology was further highlighted with a short Q&A and presentation with its industry partner, Jonathan Godoy of BG Fruits and Nuts. The team was able to extract both non-laboratory grade and laboratory grade glycogen from locally-sourced mussels.
They also started the utilization of the non-laboratory grade mussel glycogen by incorporating it in soaps and cosmetics, such as cream and ointment.
Meanwhile, FILYRO Waste Solutions, led by Dr. Ramer P. Bautista, Dean of the UPV School of Technology, was also recognized as a University Innovation Fellow (UIF) graduate at the event. The technology is an innovative solution for treating infectious solid wastes, providing ease and safety in healthcare waste management.
Both technologies are protected intellectual properties of the University and are being handled by the UP Visayas Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (UPV TTBDO) as they take off toward commercialization.
The IDI is a monetary award given to reward the diligence of inventors through the patenting and technology transfer process and encourage the early disclosure of innovations. The program is handled by the UP TTBDO Executive Committee.
The Agham + Sining: UP Innovation and Knowledge Festival 2022 is a two-day event that showcases some of the University’s best technologies, research, and creative works.
It also recognizes the University’s most brilliant and productive faculty and researchers working to address key issues in quality education, health and well-being, infrastructure and innovation, culture and the arts, and responsible consumption towards a sustainable future.
The event was streamed live from the UP Bonifacio Global City. (Ms. Christine Faith G. Germinal, UPV TTBDO)
