A PHP 20 million multifunctional sports facility at the University of the Philippines Visayas in Iloilo City was formally turned over on Monday, March 23, marking what school officials described as a long-awaited milestone for the campus.
Construction of the project began in September 2024 and was completed in January 2026, with funding support facilitated by Uswag Ilonggo Party-list Rep. James “Jojo” Ang and Sen. Loren Legarda.
The 844-square-meter facility is designed as a modern multipurpose structure that will host academic, cultural, and sports-related activities for the UP Visayas community.
At the center of the complex is a covered basketball court fitted with durable benches and a playing surface.
It is also equipped with basketball rings, an LED electronic scoreboard, and a public address system, among other features.
The project stands on the site of an old open court previously used by the UP Visayas High School.
According to the university, the original covered court built in the 1950s was heavily damaged by a typhoon shortly after its construction.
The University of the Philippines Visayas is part of the UP System and operates campuses in Miagao and Iloilo City. It is recognized for its programs in fisheries, marine science, management, and regional development, and serves as a key academic institution in Western Visayas.
UP Visayas Chancellor Clement Camposano described the turnover as “historical,” noting that the facility had long been envisioned by the university.
“This development shows that we are being continuously supported by our leaders […] Iloilo has long been a center of education, but there is always room to improve as the city continues to grow,” he said.
Ang, in his message, said the facility is “more than just a structure,” describing it as a space for learning, discipline, and growth.
“It will serve as an instructional laboratory for Physical Education, a training ground for our student-athletes, and a venue for programs that promote a culture of health, teamwork, and excellence,” he added.
On Monday, Ang also pledged to help secure funding for building a perimeter fence around the university, following concerns about the safety of students and faculty on campus.
