UP Visayas’ Panublion sweeps 3rd Saot Ilonggo
ILOILO CITY — Panublion: UP Visayas Cultural Dance Troupe won the championship at the 3rd Saot Ilonggo on Aug. 21, 2026, at the West Visayas State University Cultural Center.
The troupe swept the competition’s special awards, winning best in performance, best in choreography and best in research.
Panublion’s university-level performers were Amaleah Salve A. Maglinte, second-year BS Statistics; Kenneth John C. De la Vega, second-year BS Computer Science; Wyz Zsanhel S. Bayo-ang, second-year BA Political Science; and Maja A. Fernandez, third-year BS Management.
The ensemble’s UP High School in Iloilo performers were Ayanna P. Fuerte, Grade 12 ABM; Jonas Angelo J. Montaño, Grade 12 ABM; DJ Gabriel Y. Guevara, Grade 8 Busay; Erish Rihanna T. Gabanto, Grade 12 HUMSS; Wenz Jan L. Lacao, Grade 12 HUMSS; and Josh Lawrence L. Animas, Grade 11 HUMSS.
The other high school performers were Ryger Gianne C. Binayas, Grade 12 STEM; Davin Alastair B. Tan, Grade 9 Lubì; Rhein Paula L. Javier, Grade 10 Ilaya; Rynmer Lyndell H. Cabañas, Grade 10 Ilawod.
Assistant Professor Teresita Portugalete-Nolledo and Crisanto S. Sorsano Jr. of the Department of Physical Education at the UP Visayas College of Arts and Sciences led the dance’s creative development and research.
Portugalete-Nolledo and Sorsano choreographed “Sadsad Ilonggo” after an extensive study of the dance’s cultural roots and traditions.
Assistant Professor Jose R. Taton Jr. of the Division of Professional Education created the musical arrangement for the performance.
The competition culminated a series of Saot Ilonggo activities focused on dance research and the preservation of Ilonggo heritage.
“Sadsad Ilonggo: Devotion in Motion” was presented during a workshop and validation of dance research on July 5, 2026, at Jubilee Hall in Iloilo City.
Panublion also represented UP Visayas during the 3rd Saot Ilonggo launch on July 31, 2026, at SM City Iloilo.
The championship highlighted the roles of cultural research, music, choreography and student participation in preserving and sharing Ilonggo traditions with younger generations. (GT Mabilog, with reports from the UP Visayas College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Physical Education)
