The University of the Philippines Visayas achieved a major milestone after receiving its first Platinum Award from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines during the 2025 Innovation and Technology Support Office Presidents’ Summit held April 10 at Sequoia Hotel, Manila Bay.
The award recognizes UPV’s outstanding accomplishments in intellectual property and commercialization in 2024.
These include conducting 14 IP Foundation Courses, three Patent Search Trainings, three Patent Drafting Trainings, submitting 24 search reports, filing nine patents, eight utility models and five trademarks, registering 13 copyrights and commercializing one technology.
The Platinum distinction marks a significant leap from UPV’s previous Silver Award and reflects its growing commitment to innovation and technology transfer.
The award was received by Dr. Reynold Tan, director of the UPV Technology Transfer and Business Development Office, and Ms. Ferelyn Oliva, ITSO manager and intellectual property officer of UPV TTBDO.
The recognition was made possible through strong collaboration between UPV researchers and TTBDO, supported by the university’s leadership.
Special commendations were given to the 2024 top patent filers: Prof. Fredson Huervana and Dr. Rex Ferdinand Traifalgar of CFOS-IA, and Dr. Christopher Marlowe Caipang of the CAS Division of Biological Sciences.
With this recognition, UPV further strengthens its position as a leading academic institution in innovation and intellectual property development.
