UP Visayas chancellor nominees tackle campus concerns

ILOILO CITY — University of the Philippines Visayas sectors questioned the two nominees for the next UPV chancellor during Tapatan 2026 at the Miagao campus on Sept. 14.
Clement C. Camposano and Joefe B. Santarita faced students, employees, and community representatives at the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences audiovisual hall.
The All UP Academic Employees Union-Iloilo Chapter and the UPV University Student Council organized the forum.
Tapatan 2026 featured several segments, with panel questions and an open forum giving each sector time to raise concerns.
The discussion covered a possible expansion of UP’s presence in Negros.
Participants also raised the new campus loop and the transfer of the College of Management to the Miagao campus.
Workforce concerns included the faculty tenure system and plantilla positions for contractual, job order, and contract of service personnel.
Student issues included the availability of resources for organizations and publications.
Participants also sought the full operation of the Committee on Academic Freedom and Human Rights.
The panel included representatives of student councils, student publications, faculty, staff, administrative personnel, research, extension, and professional staff, contractual workers, job order and contract of service personnel, and the Bolho-Sapa-UP Tricycle Owners and Drivers Association, or BSUTODA.
The forum was separate from the UPV chancellor search committee’s sectoral consultations in August.
Camposano and Santarita also appeared in separate public forums on Aug. 18 and Sept. 9, respectively, as part of the official search.
Camposano is the incumbent UPV chancellor, serving a term from Nov. 1, 2023, through Oct. 31, 2026.
Santarita is a UP Diliman Asian Center professor and former dean who previously taught at UPV.
The search committee was scheduled to submit its final report to UP President Angelo Jimenez on Sept. 15.
Under Section 18 of Republic Act 9500, the UP president nominates a constituent university chancellor after consultation with its sectors.
The Board of Regents makes the final choice.
