Two suspected remnants of the New People’s Army were killed in an encounter with Philippine Army troops on Sept. 20 in Tapaz, Capiz.
The Army’s 3rd Infantry Division has yet to confirm the identities of the fatalities.
Reports said the clash occurred around 7:45 a.m. Saturday between combined forces of the 82nd Infantry Battalion, 61st Infantry Battalion, and 12th Infantry Battalion against an estimated seven members of the NPA’s Komiteng Rehiyon–Panay (KR-P).
Following the encounter, Army troops recovered two bodies at the scene.
They also seized two M16 assault rifles, an M653 rifle, a rifle grenade, explosives, ammunition, magazines, and personal belongings.
No government casualties were reported.
Maj. Gen. Michael Samson, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, commended his troops for their swift and decisive action that led to the neutralization of KR-P members and the capture of high-powered firearms.
He also recognized the critical role of local residents in ensuring the success of the operation.
“This victory is not only a testament to the dedication and bravery of our soldiers, but also to the overwhelming support and vigilance of the people of Tapaz,” Samson said.
He noted that timely intelligence provided by concerned citizens was instrumental to the operation.
Samson again urged remaining members of the rebel group to abandon the armed struggle and choose peace.
“We urge the remnants of the group to reflect on the fate of their fallen comrades and avoid the same tragic end,” he said.
He encouraged them to reintegrate into society through the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP) and ongoing amnesty initiatives.
“A new life awaits you — one where true harmony and fulfillment can only be found in the embrace of your family, your community, and a government that is ready to support your transformation,” he added.
Just a week earlier, on Sept. 13, a female medic identified as Christine May Capaducio was killed in an encounter with troops of the 61st IB in Barangay Lahug, Tapaz.
