Aside from the Arevalo district market, the markets in La Paz and Jaro districts, which are also undergoing renovations, are scheduled to reopen to the public in December 2024.
City government officials inspected the latest developments at the La Paz Public Market, where Phase 1 of the works, worth P395 million, is currently around 50 percent complete. This phase includes the market’s skeletal structure, with roofing, doors, and windows yet to be accomplished.
To address ventilation concerns raised by city personnel and market vendors during the visit, wall fans will be added to some posts, and a big blower will be installed to ensure sufficient airflow.
The Jaro Big Market, also under redevelopment, is targeted to open in December and is scheduled for a ceremonial inspection by city officials on June 5.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas stated that the city is applying for a loan with the Development Bank of the Philippines, estimated to be around P300 million for the three markets.
The mayor added that they are doing their best to ensure the three markets meet the December deadline.
The new La Paz Public Market will have 422 stalls, 73 more than the 349 before the structure was demolished, with existing vendors given priority for occupancy.
Similar to the Arevalo market, it will also feature a food court and parking lots on its second floor, accommodating 75 cars and around 20 motorcycles.
The city government is also pursuing the recovery of properties beside the market to build a service road in the area.
Works on Phase 1 began around October 2022, with portions of Rizal Street intersecting Huervana and Luna Streets adjacent to the market closed since May 2022 to allow for makeshift steel stalls to serve as a temporary market site.
