Two hurt after security guard’s gun discharges in Guimbal
By Jennifer P. Rendon
ILOILO CITY — A security guard and a hospital patient’s companion sustained minor injuries after a firearm accidentally discharged on the morning of Oct. 2 in Guimbal, Iloilo.
Injured were alias “Dexter,” a security guard from Barangay Atabayan, Tigbauan, Iloilo, and alias “Jo Ann,” 22, of Barangay Bantud, Guimbal.
Jo Ann suffered a fragment wound on her forehead, while Dexter sustained a similar injury on his left foot.
Capt. Alberto Manguilimotan Jr., Guimbal police chief, said the incident happened as Dexter was about to assume duty at the Rep. Pedro G. Trono Memorial District Hospital on Rizal Street, Guimbal, at 8:01 a.m. Friday.
After assuming duty, Dexter followed the protocol for clearing his issued firearm, a Rock Island M1911 A1 9 mm pistol with serial number RIA1935162.
“As an SOP, the outgoing security guard removed the magazine of the pistol and cocked it twice. The suspect also did the same by cocking the gun twice to check if there’s any bullet in it. After that, he pointed the gun on the ground and pulled the trigger,” Manguilimotan said.
The firearm discharged, striking the floor and sending fragments that hit Jo Ann, who was sitting about 2 meters from the guard post.
Dexter was also struck by a fragment on his left foot.
Both were immediately treated and declared out of danger.
Dexter was later placed under police custody.
Manguilimotan said Jo Ann had expressed her intention not to pursue a criminal case against the security guard.
Police are awaiting her signed affidavit of non-interest before Dexter is released from custody.
The firearm, meanwhile, will be subjected to examination.
