BACOLOD CITY—Two people were killed, and two others were seriously injured after a sugarcane-loaded long-bed truck fell off a bridge in Barangay Tamisu, Bais City, Negros Oriental, on Friday, Jan. 24.
Police Lt. Stephen Polinar, public information officer of the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (Norppo), said the truck crashed into a tree after falling from the bridge. The incident resulted in the deaths of the driver and one of the three passengers, all of whom were relatives.
As of this writing, authorities have not released the names of the two fatalities.
According to a police report, the truck encountered mechanical trouble while approaching a descending curve on the road to Bais City from Mabinay town.
The driver reportedly lost the vehicle’s brakes and attempted to control it but failed.
Polinar said rescuers responded immediately to extricate the victims.
The two injured passengers are currently recuperating in a hospital.
