TALISAY CITY, Negros Occidental — The Philippine Statistics Authority–Negros Occidental led the 29th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) Provincial Eliminations on October 27, 2025, at the Audio-Visual Room of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University in Talisay City.
The PSQ aims to assess the statistical knowledge and skills of college freshmen based on their secondary education, while promoting awareness of statistics as a vital tool in development planning and national progress.
A total of 30 students from 10 colleges and universities across the province competed in three tightly contested rounds, with each round consisting of 10 questions.
Participating schools included Bacolod City College, Binalbagan Catholic College, Carlos Hilado Memorial State University, Central Philippine State University, Colegio San Agustin–Bacolod, La Consolacion College–Bacolod, STI–West Negros University, Technological University of the Philippines–Visayas, University of Negros Occidental–Recoletos, and University of St. La Salle.
Alyana Q. Egdane, a BS Mechanical Engineering student from the Technological University of the Philippines–Visayas, emerged as the champion of the 29th PSQ Negros Occidental Provincial Eliminations.
Her schoolmate, Kenneth Marius O. Bravo, also a BS Mechanical Engineering student, placed second in the competition.
Nicole Andrea J. Gaspillo, a BS Nursing student from Colegio San Agustin–Bacolod, secured third place.
Mavierex Zon S. Lingco of the University of St. La Salle finished fourth, while Anthony V. Maguad of STI–West Negros University ranked fifth.
All winners and their coaches received plaques or certificates of recognition, medals, and gift certificates.
The top three contestants will represent Negros Occidental in the regional eliminations of the 29th PSQ on November 6, 2025, in Dumaguete City.
Regional winners will advance to the National Finals and will be the first to represent the newly created Negros Island Region.
Serving as judges were Ms. Myryl Mae S. Gamilla of St. Joseph School–La Salle, Ms. Diane Matess D. Briones of Doña Montserrat Lopez Memorial High School in Silay City, and board chair Mr. Richel R. Gumba of St. Joseph School–La Salle.
Ms. Rochelle Sacudit from the PSA–Regional Statistical Services Office Negros Island Region facilitated the quiz proper and served as quiz master.
Dr. Jay B. Estrellas, vice president for academic affairs of Carlos Hilado Memorial State University, welcomed participants and delivered an inspirational message.
Mr. John F. Campomanes, officer in charge and regional director of PSA–RSSO NIR, thanked all participating schools for their continued support of the annual PSQ.
