Barangay Ginebra wingman Troy Rosario is the latest addition to the Gilas Pilipinas pool ahead of the February window of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.
Gilas head coach Tim Cone confirmed Rosario’s inclusion on Wednesday, as injuries sidelined Kai Sotto and Kevin Quiambao.
“Troy will join us for the Doha trip,” Cone said, referring to the team’s Qatar training camp, which will include friendly games before facing Chinese Taipei on February 20 and New Zealand on February 23.
Rosario, a 6-foot-7 veteran, is expected to provide height and scoring, filling the gap left by Sotto and Quiambao.
Sotto is out due to an ACL tear sustained during Koshigaya’s loss to Mikawa in the Japan B.League on January 8.
Quiambao injured his right ankle just six minutes into his Korean Basketball League debut for Goyang Sono on January 12.
Both Sotto and Quiambao are integral to Gilas. The 7-foot-3 Sotto averaged 15.5 points and a team-high 12.5 rebounds in qualifiers, while Quiambao, the reigning UAAP MVP, contributed 11 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.
Rosario is no stranger to Gilas, having played pivotal roles during the team’s Southeast Asian Games gold medal runs from 2015 to 2019.
His familiarity with Cone’s system, honed in Barangay Ginebra’s ongoing PBA campaign, positions him as a key figure for the national team.
Rosario joins a talent pool that includes Jamie Malonzo, AJ Edu, Japeth Aguilar, and De La Salle University standout Mason Amos, as Gilas looks to solidify its roster for the crucial games ahead.
