As thousands of travelers are expected to visit destinations across Western Visayas this Holy Week, the Department of Tourism urged the public to put safety first, respect local traditions and practice responsible tourism throughout their stay.
“As we all take a brief pause, rest and reflection this Holy Week, the DOT reminds everyone to practice responsible and mindful travel, one that prioritizes safety and respect to local communities, culture, and the environment, while supporting local businesses and workers alike,” the DOT central office said in a statement on Wednesday, April 1.
In its advisory, the agency emphasized planning ahead and encouraged tourists to book accommodations, transportation and tours in advance, preferably with accredited providers to help ensure quality and safety.
Visitors were also urged to observe basic safety measures such as wearing seat belts, using life vests during water activities and following local guidelines.
Travelers were likewise advised to keep track of weather conditions and local advisories, especially those joining outdoor and religious activities around the region.
Highlighting the solemnity of the season, the DOT said tourists should respect local traditions and observe proper decorum in churches, pilgrimage sites and religious events.
The agency also called on visitors to practice sustainable tourism by keeping destinations clean, minimizing waste and cutting back on single-use plastics, especially in high-traffic areas such as beaches, mountains and heritage sites.
To help manage the expected surge of visitors, tourists were advised to visit popular sites during off-peak hours and follow capacity limits set by local authorities.
The Department of Health also urged the public to avoid illness and emergencies during the Lenten break, advising those planning Visita Iglesia to bring water, an umbrella, medicines and light snacks, and to keep emergency numbers and local hotlines on hand. Health authorities have also reminded the public to stay hydrated and protect themselves from heat exposure during Holy Week travel.
Holy Week is one of the busiest travel periods in the Philippines, with families visiting pilgrimage sites and tourist destinations across Western Visayas, including Iloilo, Guimaras, Antique, Aklan and Capiz. Among the region’s best-known Holy Week observances is Guimaras’ Pagtaltal sa Balaan Bukid, an annual Good Friday reenactment of Christ’s passion in Jordan town that draws pilgrims and tourists each year.
