With the 2028 national elections drawing closer, names are already being floated for Iloilo City’s lone congressional seat, including former Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Councilor Miguel Treñas.
But both officials have downplayed early speculation, saying it is premature to discuss political plans.
In a statement issued Tuesday, March 17, Mabilog brushed aside reports and survey results linking him to a possible congressional run, stressing that his focus remains on public service rather than early politicking.
Mabilog said that while he sees no legal impediment should he decide to run again, he is not engaging in what he described as “survey-driven politics” this early.
“It is only 2026 and yet it seems there is already names for the 2028 elections,” he said.
He emphasized that addressing current concerns should take precedence, particularly the needs of senior citizens, persons with disabilities, vendors, and transport drivers affected by rising fuel prices and increasing real property taxes.
The former mayor added that elections are not won through surveys but through clear intent and sustained public service.
In January 2025, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. granted Mabilog executive clemency, effectively removing the administrative penalties and disabilities arising from his Ombudsman case and restoring his eligibility to run for public office.
The clemency was granted in connection with Mabilog’s administrative case, primarily the 2017 Ombudsman decision that dismissed him from service and perpetually disqualified him from holding public office over serious dishonesty and related charges.
Mabilog served as Iloilo City mayor from 2013 to 2017 before leaving the country amid the Ombudsman proceedings. His executive clemency in 2025 was widely seen as reopening the door to a political comeback, making him one of the most closely watched figures in the city’s political landscape heading into 2028.
Treñas, in an ambush interview, neither confirmed nor denied reports of a possible congressional bid, saying the decision remains under consideration.
Now on his third and final term as councilor, he said consultations with his family have yet to take place.
“As of now I cannot confirm nor deny whether I will run. As of now, what I am doing is to give service to our constituents […] Yes, [I am contemplating.] I have not discussed it yet with my wife, family regarding my decisions,” he said.
He added that it is “normal” for his name to be floated among potential candidates, but clarified that he has also yet to consult with fellow members of Team Uswag or barangay leaders regarding any plans for 2028.
Treñas is the son of former mayor Jerry P. Treñas and brother of incumbent Mayor Raisa Treñas.
For now, Miguel Treñas said his priority is fulfilling his commitments to constituents following the 2025 elections, particularly through continued engagements in barangays.
The city’s incumbent lone district representative, Julienne Baronda, is in her final term.
