Teen drowns during father’s birthday outing in Oton

ILOILO CITY — A 13-year-old boy drowned while swimming at a beach resort in Oton, Iloilo, on the afternoon of Sept. 20.
Police identified the victim as alias “Keith,” a resident of Barangay San Jose, Jaro, Iloilo City.
Keith, his family, and their friends went to Sea Vill Beach Resort in Barangay Botong, Oton, to celebrate his father’s birthday.
At around 3:40 p.m., Keith went swimming with his two older brothers, Kent and Ken, and their friend, alias “JB.”
Kent told police that they accidentally stepped into a deeper portion of the water, causing them to sink suddenly.
He said he tried to save Keith, but the boy was swept away by a strong current.
Lt. Col. Norbert Sipole, Oton police chief, said personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office conducted a search-and-rescue operation.
After nearly an hour, rescuers recovered Keith from the waters off Barangay Trapiche, Oton.
