ILOILO CITY — An 18-year-old man was arrested shortly after allegedly hacking a 60-year-old woman during a drinking session Sunday evening, Oct. 25, in Passi City, Iloilo.
The suspect, identified only as alias “Leonel,” a resident of Barangay Maite Grande, Lambunao, Iloilo, could be released from police custody following an amicable settlement between his family and the victim’s relatives, according to police.
The victim, identified only as alias “Criselda,” a resident of Barangay Gemumua-Agahon, Passi City, remains hospitalized but is reportedly out of danger.
According to police reports, the suspect was staying at a house in Barangay Gemumua-Agahon.
Earlier that day, he had been drinking liquor with the owner of the house.
Their drinking session ended early that evening.
The suspect had already gone to bed when Criselda arrived carrying a bottle of liquor.
Leonel then resumed drinking with Criselda.
Shortly afterward, the house owner heard a heated argument and a commotion.
The argument allegedly escalated when the suspect grabbed a machete and hacked the victim, striking the left side of her face.
Leonel immediately fled the scene, taking with him the weapon allegedly used in the attack.
Barangay watchmen later cornered the suspect, placed him under citizen’s arrest and turned him over to the Passi City Police Station.
Criselda was rushed to Don Valerio Palmares Sr. Memorial District Hospital in Passi City for treatment.
Lt. Col. Peter John Pisueña, Passi City police chief, said intoxication appeared to have contributed to the incident.
He added that a member of the victim’s family had executed an affidavit of noninterest, indicating that the family no longer intended to pursue a complaint against Leonel.
However, an affidavit of desistance or a private settlement does not automatically extinguish criminal liability under Philippine law.
The suspect’s possible release and any criminal proceedings remain subject to applicable legal procedures.
