The Philippine men’s national tennis team expressed their disappointment after missing the 2021 Davis Cup due to Philippine Tennis Association’s (PHILTA) suspension.
To recall, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) slapped PHILTA with a suspension after the PH tennis organization missed crucial requirements.
The ITF ordered PHILTA to have its membership increased and create ways to make the organization more inclusive which they failed to do.
Apart from these conditions, PHILTA also failed to submit the required documents the ITF asked them to provide.
Treat Huey, Ruben Gonzales, and Niño Alcantara, three of the most well-known Filipino tennis players always present in the Davis Cup legs shared their sentiments regarding their absence this year.
“It is embarrassing that the federation has been suspended and we are not able to play Davis Cup this week. It’s heartbreaking that I don’t have the opportunity to represent the country this week and help us win and earn promotion to Group II,” said Huey.
Up to this date, the ITF still wasn’t able to give an update as to whether PHILTA already met the necessary requirements to lift their suspension.
“Playing Davis Cup and representing my country has honestly been the biggest honor of my career! And I’m looking forward to playing Davis cup again whenever that will be,” shared Gonzales.
