A barangay tanod (village watchman) died after he accidentally shot himself evening of Nov 1, 2022 in Maasin, Iloilo.
Ervin Mediana, 36, was at a neighbor’s wake at Barangay Burak, Maasin, when the incident happened.
Captain Richard Lao, Maasin police chief, said the victim was resting on a hammock when his 12-gauge (break-type) shotgun placed inside his sling bag went off.
Mediana’s sister was also at the wake when the accidental firing occurred.
The victim suffered pellet wounds on his thigh. He was rushed to Federico Roman Tirador Sr. Memorial District Hospital in Janiuay, Iloilo but he did not pull through.
Lao said Mediana could have died from loss of blood.
Burak is around 10 kilometers away from the nearest hospital.
Responding policemen had to take the route in Janiuay town as the bridge in Barangay Napnud, Maasin, was damaged and rendered impassable.
