Swiatek dismantles Shnaider to enter National Bank Open semis

Iga Swiatek’s dominant run in the ongoing National Bank Open continued after she swept Diana Shnaider, 6-2, 6-1, to reach the semifinal round at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto, Ontario, on Aug. 11, 2026.

Fresh off a come-from-behind Round of 16 win over Marta Kostyuk, Swiatek picked up where she left off, handing Shnaider a lopsided beating in just an hour of tennis action.

Known for her relentless service game, Shnaider saw her bread and butter quickly neutralized by Swiatek, who opted to apply immense pressure on her service games.

Out of nine break opportunities, Swiatek converted five, setting the tone in the first set after the Polish ace immediately broke Shnaider twice in a row.

After that sequence, Swiatek swiftly took command, sucking the life out of the struggling Shnaider, who failed to generate her usual points off her service game.

Shnaider attempted to target Swiatek’s backhand side when the fourth game of the set kicked off, but her strategic move didn’t age well as the world No. 6 WTA player welcomed the challenge and relied on her consistent groundstrokes.

Even a 1-2 drop-wide forehand pattern couldn’t save Shnaider from embarrassment as Swiatek was on a roll and had plenty of answers to the Russian’s playbook.

It was all Swiatek in the second set after she limited Shnaider to just a single game in the frame, courtesy of well-placed forehand shots into no man’s land and a series of overhead winners at the net.

Without exerting too much effort or power, Swiatek raced to a 5-1 advantage off a double-break lead that formally ended Shnaider’s promising campaign in Toronto.

Swiatek capped the one-sided quarterfinal victory with 58 total points won in just two sets, including five break points and 30 points on return.

On the other hand, Shnaider clearly struggled against the laser-focused Swiatek, tallying only 35 total points won, 10 points on return and three double faults.

Up next for Swiatek in the semis is world No. 9 WTA player Elina Svitolina, who earlier survived Ekaterina Alexandrova, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
