The ambassador of Sweden to the Philippines paid a courtesy visit to the city and provincial governments of Iloilo to explore deeper collaboration between Sweden and local government units.
H.E. Anna Ferry said her visit with Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. and Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu on Wednesday, Oct. 9, aimed to better understand the province and city’s development priorities and identify areas for potential partnership.
“One reason for us to be here today is also to explore more collaborations and to better understand what are the priorities of the mayor and the governor — the areas, development plans, and goals they are pursuing — so we can look into how we can support them in achieving those goals,” Ferry said in an interview.
She noted that Sweden has strong expertise and advanced technology in key sectors, including transportation, renewable energy, energy efficiency, and water management.
“There are a few areas that we are looking into how we can expand our cooperation not only in the transport system but also in other areas,” she added.
One active initiative supported by Sweden is the ongoing feasibility study for the proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Iloilo, led by Swedfund International, Sweden’s development finance institution.
Swedfund provided a grant worth approximately PHP 33 million (6 million Swedish krona) through a partnership with the Metro Iloilo–Guimaras Economic Development Council.
The grant funds a feasibility study evaluating the technical, financial, environmental, and social viability of a modern public transport system in Iloilo City and surrounding towns.
“It is part of a very important engagement for the green transition of Iloilo,” Ferry said, adding that a BRT system would ease traffic congestion and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Swedfund Project Manager Louise Bernander said they are currently in the inception and data-gathering phase of the study.
When asked about alternatives should a BRT system prove unfeasible, Bernander explained that the study will also recommend integrating existing transport services with future routes and identifying needed infrastructure investments.
“Our study is looking at an integrated plan. The BRT might be part of the solution, it could be the only solution, or there can be a mix. We are very committed to being a long-term partner in this project and finding a solution that works for the city and other towns,” she said.
