Joel Codilla of Kataingan village in Masbate suffered bruises after several residents mauled him.
Investigation by Police Staff Sergeant Jazal Andrada of the Roxas City Police Station said Codilla went to the store of victim Anita Adorio, 60, at Banica wharf here.
Adorio, who was selling carpentry tools, asked him what he wanted but the suspect suddenly strangled her neck.
Not contented, the suspect took one of the hammers in the store and pummeled the senior citizen’s head before snatching her sling bag.
Codilla fled towards Brgy. Bato also in this city.
Upon learning of the incident, village police or tanods and residents chased and beat up the suspect.
The sling bag with P7,734 cash was recovered from the suspect.
