The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Iloilo Chapter is once again calling on the public to help replenish its blood supply, as early 2025 donations have fallen short. This appeal is not just a plea—it is a call to action to every able-bodied Ilonggo to contribute to a lifesaving cause.
Blood donation is not merely an act of charity; it is a fundamental pillar of a functioning healthcare system. The PRC Iloilo Chapter supplies blood to 26 hospitals in the province, ensuring that patients undergoing surgery, women in childbirth, accident victims, and those with chronic illnesses receive the treatment they need. The urgency of this need cannot be overstated. A steady blood supply is a non-negotiable requirement in medical care, and without it, lives hang in the balance.
One of the most compelling reasons to donate blood is its direct impact on saving lives. Each donation can help up to three individuals, providing them with a second chance at life. Whether it is a mother battling postpartum hemorrhage, a child with leukemia, or a patient undergoing an organ transplant, donated blood is often the difference between life and death.
Additionally, blood donation benefits the donors themselves. Regular blood donation has been linked to improved cardiovascular health, as it helps reduce excessive iron levels in the blood, lowering the risk of heart disease. It also stimulates the production of new blood cells, contributing to overall health and well-being. Beyond physical health, the act of donating blood instills a sense of fulfillment and civic responsibility, fostering a culture of bayanihan that strengthens the community.
PRC Iloilo aims to collect at least 25,000 blood units annually, and while they exceeded this goal last year with 31,000 units, the challenge persists. Blood has a limited shelf life, and without consistent donations, supplies can dwindle quickly. Emergencies and medical procedures cannot be put on hold due to a lack of blood. This is why organizations, schools, and local government units should heed the call to organize at least two blood donation drives a year.
Eligible donors aged 18 to 60 in good health are encouraged to visit the PRC Iloilo office or participate in mobile blood donation drives. By setting aside a small portion of time to donate, you are giving someone the gift of life. The need is constant; the gratification is immediate. Ilonggos have always been known for their compassion and resilience—now is the time to show it.
