Suarez TKOs Avila to capture vacant WBO International title

Filipino boxing star Charly Suarez returned with a bang after scoring a first-round technical knockout win over Manuel Avila to clinch the vacant WBO International Super Featherweight title on July 18, 2026, at the National Orange Show Event Center in San Bernardino, California.

A year since his no-contest result against Emanuel Navarrete, Suarez came back as if he never left, capping the WBO showdown with only 29 seconds remaining in the first round.

Aiming to have a blistering start in his comeback fight, Suarez’s camp was more than ready to neutralize Avila’s high punch volume, counterpunching, and improved defense in the ropes.

Suarez forced the action by applying pressure while targeting Avila’s midsection with brutal body punches to pull off the strategic plan.

That opening execution set the tone for the Filipino, while putting Avila on the back foot as he failed to switch defensive stances due to the body punches he absorbed for a full minute.

Suarez then mixed things up after changing his point of attack upstairs. The offensive shift caught Avila off guard, leaving his head wide open in several instances that slowed him down as the first round was about to end.

After the first two minutes of action, Suarez finally exposed Avila’s high guard defense and pinned him to the ropes twice as he sent a barrage of uppercut-left straight combinations.

The finishing blow came in the final 29 seconds of the opener after Suarez landed a clean right straight followed by a short hook.

Avila momentarily withstood the damage and sought to continue, but a delayed reaction forced him to kneel down, resulting in a knockdown.

The official match referee then waved off the fight after the American pug failed to maintain balance upon standing up, sealing the deal for Suarez to wrap up the comeback fight on a high note.

With the impressive victory, Suarez extended his undefeated professional record to 19 wins and 11 knockouts, while Avila slipped to 26 wins, nine knockouts, and three losses.
