The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) in Guimaras held a mural painting contest on June 25, 2025, as part of its Arbor Day celebration.
Four schools participated in the contest, which took place on the walls of the PENRO Guimaras compound in San Miguel, Jordan, with the theme “Ending Global Plastic Pollution.”
High school students from Buenavista National High School, Getulio National High School, Jordan National High School, and Nueva Valencia National High School showcased their artistic talents and environmental advocacy through their mural designs.
“I am asking you, students, to plant more trees in your schools and actively participate in proper waste management practices,” said PENR Officer Louie L. Laud.
Jordan National High School was declared the champion, followed by Getulio National High School in second place, Buenavista National High School in third, and Nueva Valencia National High School in fourth.
Buenavista National High School also earned the People’s Choice Award, receiving 905 reactions, 45 comments, and 122 shares on Facebook.
“This activity serves as a medium for the youth to be part of this ecologically sustainable change, to show their commitment to nature and the environment as they share their artistic talents,” said Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region VI Regional Executive Director Raul L. Lorilla.
“We encourage other youths to participate in this kind of activity, as well as in other initiatives that benefit both humans and nature,” he added.
Another Arbor Day 2025 activity was a tree planting event held at the Community-Based Forest Management Area in Barangay Dagsaan, Buenavista, Guimaras.
PENRO Guimaras personnel led the effort, joined by representatives from the Society of Filipino Foresters Inc. – Guimaras Chapter, the Guimaras Upland Farmers Association Inc., the Guimaras Charcoal Firewood Makers and Producers Association, and the local government unit.
They planted 300 seedlings of various forest and fruit-bearing trees, including narra, chestnut, jackfruit, camachile, and batuan.
