Philippine-based basketball organization Strong Group will be bringing back the core which led them to last year’s William Jones Cup championship title.
Ready to claim the throne and gun for back-to-back golden trophies, Strong Group-Pilipinas will grace the upcoming 44th edition of the William Jones Cup from July 12 to July 20, 2025, to be held at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
Strong Group wanted continuity while maintaining the chemistry that they already built, thus, bringing back their core group of Kiefer Ravena, Rhenz Abando, and Dave Ildefonso.
“We’re going all out in defending the country’s William Jones Cup title. We’re glad to bring back the core of the team, and with their chemistry and experience, we’re confident in our chances. More than anything, we want to make the country proud again,” said Strong Group president Jacob Lao.
Also back in the lineup for the PHL representatives are Jason Brickman, Geo Chiu, and the young star front-court duo of Allen Liwag and Ange Kouame.
According to Lao, spearheading the team’s quest for a second consecutive chip is former Oklahoma City Thunder two-way stopper Andre Roberson, who was also included in last year’s roster.
Meanwhile, DJ Fenner, a revelation member who was a key contributor in last year’s campaign, will also make a return trip at Strong Group together with bruising big man Tajuan Agee.
Still calling the shots is head coach Charles Tiu, Strong Group’s staple chief tactician, but his pool of assistant coaches is yet to be revealed by the organization.
Last season, Strong Group pulled off a miraculous comeback to win the championship after stunning Chinese-Taipei, 83-79.
Down by seven points with only a minute remaining, Strong Group already looked dead in the water and was already pushing emergency button with time not on their side.
Strong Group relied on their never-say-die attitude and wrapped up the regulation on a 9-2 scoring run. Big shots were converted by Ravena, Jordan Heading, Agee, and Chris McCullough to seal the deal.
“Yeah, I’m excited to bring back some guys from our championship squad. This might be the first time we’re able to run it back with this many returning players,” said coach Tiu.
