ANTIPOLO — They’re all here.
From seasoned veterans like Angelo Que, Tony Lascuña and Guido van der Valk, to in-form contenders such as Aidric Chan and Carl Corpus, to young internationalists Sean Ramos and Lloyd Go — plus reliable names like Keanu Jahns, Reymon Jaraula and Rupert Zaragosa.
Add to that a competitive mix featuring Jhonnel Ababa, Ira Alido, Zanieboy Gialon, Hyun Ho Rho and Mike Bibat, and the stage is set for a thrilling PHP2 million ICTSI Valley Golf Challenge, which tees off today at the Valley Golf South course.
But this won’t just be a contest of power and precision — it will be a test of strategy, composure, and mental toughness.
The South layout, softened by last week’s rains brought by a tropical storm, now plays longer and trickier, demanding creativity and discipline under pressure.
Expect chaos — and brilliance — in these exacting conditions, where the margins for error are slim and bold plays could make or break a title run.
With numerous players in peak form, the title race is wide open.
A single moment — a daring approach over water, a pressure-packed birdie putt, or a gutsy up-and-down from the sand — could determine the champion.
The challenging terrain and stacked field set the stage for what could be one of the most dramatic finishes of the season.
Van der Valk, fresh from a one-stroke win over Jahns and Que at Forest Hills that ended a long title drought, carries momentum into the fourth leg of the Philippine Golf Tour, presented by ICTSI.
Que, meanwhile, is eager to bounce back after his bid for a rare treble was halted at Forest Hills following wins at Pradera Verde and Eagle Ridge.
Lascuña, a four-time PGT Order of Merit champion known for thriving in tough conditions, is determined to reverse a slow start this season.
He finished 13th at Pradera, tied for sixth at Eagle Ridge, and slid to 25th at Forest Hills — but his grit and experience make him a serious contender.
Cousins Chan and Corpus, both riding high from breakthrough wins on the Asian Development Tour in Morocco, are also in the spotlight.
How their international success translates on home soil will be closely watched.
Go and Ramos, returning from stints in Japan and the Asian Tour, respectively, bring valuable experience and fresh perspective to the field.
But with this deep and determined cast, pedigree alone won’t be enough to hoist the trophy.
Jaraula, who dominated this course in 2023 with a five-shot win over Go, aims to recapture that form and snap out of a recent slump.
Despite missing the top 10 in the past few legs, his familiarity with the South course and past success make him a dangerous dark horse.
With soggy fairways limiting rollout, receptive greens inviting aggressive play, and the threat of shifting conditions always present, players will need sharp focus and nerves of steel to survive the 72-hole test.
Expect leaderboard swings, big rallies, and late-round drama in a tournament that promises both punishment and opportunity at every turn.
