BACOLOD CITY – A 40‑year‑old woman identified as “Ruf” died Wednesday afternoon after she was struck by a speeding motorcycle while crossing a pedestrian lane in front of a hospital in Barangay Pahanocoy.
Police Executive Master Sgt. Rodney Tiania, deputy chief of the Traffic Enforcement Unit, said the crash occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m. as Ruf and a child companion crossed the marked lane.
Tiania said Ruf suffered severe injuries and succumbed to her wounds in the hospital at around 5 p.m.
He confirmed that the child was unharmed in the incident.
The motorcycle driver, 20‑year‑old “Cris” of Barangay Tangub, was carrying a 19‑year‑old companion from Barangay Pahanocoy at the time of the collision.
“Based on witness statements, the driver was speeding and caused the victim to be thrown off, resulting in serious injuries,” Tiania said.
Both Cris and his companion are now hospitalized recovering from injuries sustained in the crash.
The motorcycle also rammed into a modernized passenger jeepney and a parked tricycle along the roadside.
A criminal complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide was filed against Cris on Friday, Tiania confirmed.
The tragedy has prompted renewed calls for stricter enforcement of speed limits and pedestrian safety measures around hospitals and busy crossings in Bacolod City.
