SPC Power Corp. has received approval from the Department of Energy (DOE) to build a 48-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Iloilo, marking a key milestone in the company’s renewable energy expansion.
SPC Chairman Alfredo Henares announced the DOE’s issuance of a certificate of authority during the company’s annual stockholders’ meeting on June 11.
He said the go-ahead for the Iloilo project is part of SPC’s broader goal to add 500 MW of new capacity by 2029.
“As to SPC’s solar power projects, it has received a certificate of authority from the DOE to complete its 48 MW solar power plant project in Iloilo—marking a significant step toward building SPC’s renewable energy footprint,” Henares said.
The certificate allows SPC Power to begin securing permits and tenure instruments from national agencies and local government units.
These include the environmental compliance certificate, building permits, and other regulatory approvals required before construction.
With the DOE authorization, SPC can also begin procuring materials, equipment, and services for the project.
The company will coordinate with the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines to conduct a system impact study to ensure the facility’s safe integration into the national grid.
Once all permits and studies are secured, SPC Power can begin the physical construction of the solar plant.
SPC Power currently operates the 146.5 MW Panay Diesel Power Plant in Dingle, Iloilo.
Henares also said SPC is investing in battery energy storage systems to support grid reliability as the country’s renewable energy mix expands.
“SPC is currently advancing the development of its battery energy storage projects to support grid power amid the increasing renewable power capacity in the system,” he said.
