After three long months of waiting, the Spanish football league is set to return on June 12, 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced that La Liga and other professional sports will be allowed to return to operation starting June 8 as long as the leagues will follow safety protocols issued by the government.
“Of course, play will resume under conditions that guarantee the maximum health security for all the competitors,” Sanchez said.
Since March 12, all sports were canceled due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the decision of the resume of all professional sports by June excited Spain.
“We are very pleased with the decision. It is the result of the great work of clubs, players, coaches, CSD (Spain’s sports authority), agents, etc. But we cannot lower our guard. It is important to follow health regulations and ensure the pandemic doesn’t come back,” Spanish league president Javier Tebas wrote on Twitter.
Several star La Liga players expressed their excitement and happiness regarding the situation including FC Barcelona’s superstar, Lionel Messi.
