BACOLOD City – Several mayors in the province of Negros Occidental will subject themselves to swab testing after a fellow mayor tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19.
Provincial Board Member Jose Benito Alonso confirmed to Daily Guardian on Friday that his twin brother Pontevedra Mayor Jose Maria Alonso was infected with SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease.
Jose Maria is the second mayor in the province of Negros Occidental who contracted the virus.
Some of the mayors who were reached by Daily Guardian confirmed they were with Alonso in a meeting last week.
Jose Maria and nine members of his household underwent a swab test after his wife Mary Gerardine had a fever Tuesday, was swabbed and tested positive for the virus.
The mayor, who is asymptomatic, said they do not know where and how his wife was infected with COVID-19 as she seldom goes out of their house.
EB Magalona Mayor Marvin Malacon was the first to test positive for COVID-19.
