BACOLOD CITY – By the end of August, the Negros Occidental Capitol will officially run on solar power.
What began as a concept is now a reality, with solar panels installed on the rooftops of key government facilities—the Capitol Building, Cyber Center, Food Terminal Market, and Negros Residences—quietly generating renewable energy.
Provincial Administrator Atty. Rayfrando Diaz II told reporters Wednesday that the “solarization project” comes at no cost to the provincial government, thanks to a public-private partnership with WeGen Energy Philippines Inc.
Instead of paying for installation, the province agreed to purchase solar power at PHP6.90 per kilowatt-hour for 15 years, he said.
“This is not just about lowering power bills. It’s about leading the way toward sustainability and responsible energy use,” Diaz said, adding that even Capitol-run hospitals will soon operate on solar power.
Beyond cost savings, the initiative sends a strong message: Negros Occidental is embracing clean energy and leading by example among local governments.
The province aims to reduce its reliance on conventional energy sources while supporting global efforts to cut carbon emissions.
Known for its sugar plantations and rich cultural heritage, Negros Occidental now adds another distinction—a government committed to investing in renewable energy.
When the solar panels go live by month’s end, the Capitol will not only be illuminated but also stand as a beacon of sustainability.
Diaz said the transition to renewable energy is expected to significantly lower electricity expenses, reduce dependence on traditional power, and support the province’s sustainability goals.
“This initiative is part of the province’s effort to achieve energy savings and support environmental conservation,” he added.
The project underscores Negros Occidental’s commitment to clean energy, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints and promote a greener future.
