Slope protection built to ensure safety along Aklan coastal road

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Aklan District Engineering Office is currently undertaking the construction of slope protection structure along Aklan West Road in Brgy. Libertad in Nabas town.

The ₱56.7-million project includes the installation of erosion control mat (type 4), high tensile active wire mesh with permanent ground anchor, and hydroseeding.

Citing a report from OIC-District Engineer Gener J. Abergas, Regional Director Nerie D. Bueno said the construction of slope protection which measures 84.5-meter high and 48.5-meter long in length, is prioritized under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) FY 2022 due to the location’s susceptibility to landslides.

“The slope protection project along the Aklan West Road will safeguard the side of the hill from soil erosion, which may be harmful to vehicles and commuters passing along the national highway,” Bueno explained.

The project also assures that residents, locals, and visitors approaching and exiting the famous Boracay Island are protected from dangerous rock and soil erosion along the national highway.

On the other hand, residents along the road are grateful to DPWH for prioritizing their safety and protection against landslides in their area through the slope protection project.

“Landslides are frequent in this area, and they are very dangerous.  After the project was built, no further landslides happened, even during heavy rain. We are thankful to DPWH personnel that construction has started and prioritized our safety,” said Mr. Rolan T. Dalisay, a resident of Aklan. (DPWH-6)
