BACOLOD City – Despite reminders from authorities against illegal gambling and mass gathering amid the pandemic, 16 persons were arrested in alleged illegal cockfights here and in Negros Occidental last Sunday.
Nine persons were apprehended at Hacienda San Vicente, Barangay Purisima, Manapla town, while two others escaped.
Recovered were three dead fighting cocks, two gaffs with cover, and P400.
Seven other persons were also arrested at Barangay Punta Taytay here, after police received reports about a cockfight in the area.
Other participants evaded the authorities, according to the police.
Police recovered three Jolo roosters, an improvised cockpit arena, and P1,200.
Cockfighting is prohibited to prevent the spread of the virus brought about by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
