Six teams sprint for 2026 PVL Invitational crown

MANILA — Six teams. Six playdates. One crown.

The Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference will test endurance, recovery and composure as much as talent and firepower during its compressed run at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Defending champion PLDT opens its title defense against Thailand’s EST Cola, 11-time league champion Creamline faces a revamped Nxled squad and Farm Fresh meets Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam in Monday’s opening tripleheader.

With three matches on every playdate, the tournament will be a sprint to the championship. A slow start or dip in form could prove costly as the limited recovery time places a premium on execution, stamina and roster depth.

“Parang nangyari na sa atin ito nung first PVL na tuloy-tuloy yung laro. So it’s just siguro ang mahalaga is paano talaga makakarecover in the first game, second game, yung mga susunod,” Creamline middle blocker Sachi Minowa, formerly Jaja Santiago, said.

Minowa spent seven seasons in Japan’s top-level league and understands the challenge of recovering quickly between matches.

She scored six points in Creamline’s 25-21, 25-16, 25-21 sweep of Galeries Tower during the PVL On Tour Showdown finale in Negros Occidental last week.

“Kasi yung skills nandyan kasi yun eh, yung pagod, yun ang mahirap, hindi mo alam kung paano ka magrerecover, kung paano mo susulitin yung oras mo kasi the next day may game ka. So marami rin kami sa team and we’re trying to palakasin yung bawat isa, yung connection ng bawat isa. Kasi sabi nga natin ang volleyball hindi naman individual lang yan eh. Sama-sama kami, magkatulong-tulong kami and we’re gonna do our very best talaga sa Invitational,” Minowa added.

Creamline coach Sherwin Meneses’ rotation and game management could become critical as fatigue sets in.

The Cool Smashers have a deep group of veterans and rising players, giving Meneses several options as the tournament progresses.

Creamline, which placed third in last year’s Invitational, gets its first major test at 4 p.m. against an Nxled side still searching for the right combination to turn its star power into consistent results.

The Chameleons’ roster includes Brooke Van Sickle, Myla Pablo, MJ Phillips, Jonah Escamilla, Chiara Permentilla, Jovelyn Fernandez, EJ Cariño and Leyann de Guzman, along with new recruits Gel Cayuna and Jackie Acuña.

Nxled went 2-2 in the On Tour Showdown, including a four-set loss to Creamline. Monday’s rematch gives the Chameleons an immediate chance to show that their retooled roster is ready for a bigger stage.

The PLDT-EST Cola match at 1:30 p.m. will open the tournament.

The High Speed Hitters feature Savi Davison, Kim Dy and Alleiah Malaluan, with Majoy Baron and Mika Reyes anchoring the middle.

EST Cola returns to the PVL Invitational after representing Thailand in the 2024 edition and finishing fourth.

The Thai club’s speed, tactical creativity and fighting spirit could trouble a team still trying to establish its rhythm in a compressed tournament.

PLDT coach Rald Ricafort also has a dependable bench that could become increasingly valuable as fatigue accumulates.

Farm Fresh takes on Ho Chi Minh at 6:30 p.m., giving the Foxies the first look at the new Vietnamese club.

Ho Chi Minh enters the Invitational with a fresh system and a largely unfamiliar roster. Vietnamese teams are known for their speed, skill and determined play, making the opener an early measure of Farm Fresh’s ability to compete against international opposition.

The Foxies are embracing that challenge.

“Siguro ito yung isa sa magandang opportunity para sa team namin kasi it’s a test na naman ng teamwork namin ng chemistry namin. So masaya lang ako na ma-experience yan ng buong team namin na makalaro ng international players, hindi lang basta players kundi best of the best ng ibang Asian countries,” Farm Fresh top hitter Ces Molina said.

For Molina, the Invitational offers Farm Fresh an opportunity to measure its teamwork and chemistry against some of Asia’s best players.

Veteran Ara Galang also welcomes the international competition.

“Laban ulit, panibagong laban yun at saka merong international teams. Siyempre mas iba yung magiging labanan. Basta bibigay lang namin yung best namin every time, magwo-work kami as a team,” Galang said.

Winning the opener will be crucial for all six teams because of the momentum, confidence and energy it could provide for the succeeding matches.

Tuesday’s tripleheader has PLDT facing Nxled at 1:30 p.m., Farm Fresh battling EST Cola at 4 p.m. and Creamline meeting Ho Chi Minh at 6:30 p.m.

The tournament takes a break Wednesday before resuming with consecutive playdates Thursday and Friday.

The elimination round concludes Sunday, with the top two teams advancing to the winner-take-all championship match Tuesday, Sept. 8. The final playdate also includes the third-place match and fifth-place classification game.

The teams that manage their players’ workloads, trust their depth and maintain their composure may be the ones still standing when the sprint for the crown ends.
