Jannik Sinner punched a ticket to the Wimbledon semifinals after eliminating Ben Shelton- 7.6, 6.4, 6.4- during their quarterfinal duel on July 9, 2025, at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.
Despite an anticlimactic ending to his Round of 16 win against Grigor Dimitrov, who had to retire after suffering an injury, the Italian ace made it up in the next round after taking care of business against Shelton.
Sinner shrugged off a slow start against Dimitrov and delighted the fans in attendance with a ‘forehand firework’ barrage that kept Shelton on his heels in the back-and-forth first set.
It was anybody’s match when both stalwarts answered each other’s service hold possessions until a tiebreaker was reached to decide who would take first blood.
Sinner immediately gained his footing after racing to a 4-1 advantage made possible by his signature flat groundstroke winners and his consistent serving game.
After an energetic performance fighting Sinner fire with fire, Shelton slowed down in the most important period of the first set, conceding a 7-2 loss that allowed Sinner to grasp full momentum of the match in the next two sets.
Known to be a power player who can create quick points in his returns, Shelton’s offense was limited in the second set when Sinner targeted his deep backhand side.
By doing this, Sinner forced Shelton out of his comfort zone, and turning to his right shoulder to switch to forehand became an erratic adjustment for the young American challenger.
Sinner was able to keep that strategy until the end of the match and only caused more headache for Shelton who failed to adjust mid-game.
Aside from Sinner’s tremendous strategy, Shelton committed some costly unforced errors in the third and final set when he was about to make a run and tie the game at 5-all.
Sinner will only have a day of rest before returning to the Centre Court, facing Novak Djokovic in the semis who survived an early 0-1 set deficit against Flavio Cobolli.
