SIGMA, Capiz – The first day of implementing the municipal speed limit ordinance on June 1, 2025, was deemed successful, with motorists showing full cooperation, according to officials.
Riza Otayde, district chief of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Dumalag District Office, shared the assessment during a media interview.
Meanwhile, LTO Region 6 Director Gaudioso Geduspan II encouraged other local government units in Western Visayas to adopt a similar ordinance to help reduce road accidents and save lives.
Sigma became the first municipality in Capiz—and in Western Visayas—to implement a speed limit ordinance following a weeklong dry run in May.
The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Sigma launched the implementation of Ordinance No. 05-S-2024 during a press conference on May 27.
The ordinance sets speed limits for all vehicles within the town’s jurisdiction and imposes penalties for violations.
It aims to promote safer roads, protect lives, and encourage responsible driving practices across the municipality and province.
Mayor Dante Rizal Eslabon said Sigma is also the first municipality in the region to deploy Speed Enforcement Cameras in three key locations: Barangays Pari-an, Dayhagon, and Tawog.
A PHP7 million budget was allocated for the project, which underscores the LGU’s commitment to public road safety.
The speed cameras will operate 24/7 and be managed by the Public Order and Safety Unit (POSU), with support from the LTO Dumalag District Office and Sigma Municipal Police Station.
Geduspan praised the LGU’s efforts, saying the initiative supports the national road safety campaign of LTO Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II.
He also cited the collaboration between the LTO, LGU Sigma, and the Philippine National Police as a model for other localities.
