SGA signs ex-NBA center Marjanović for Jones Cup title defense

The Strong Group Athletics-Pilipinas completed the acquisition of former NBA talent Boban Marjanović, reinforcing the team ahead of the upcoming 44th William Jones Cup, the team announced on July 24, 2026.

As the PHL-based basketball organization seeks a third consecutive title in the prestigious hoops tournament to be held in Taiwan, securing the commitment of the renowned frontcourt star became its first mission as it aims to build another championship roster.

Before joining Strong Group, Marjanović rendered his services to Perspektiva Ilirija, a team currently competing in the Slovenian League.

The towering 7-foot-4 presence dominated the recently concluded season, averaging 13.9 points and 8.6 rebounds before agreeing to a short-term contract with Strong Group.

Marjanović spent nine seasons in the NBA, debuting with the San Antonio Spurs after the franchise offered him a contract following his going undrafted in 2010.

The Serbian center quickly gained popularity in the NBA and was widely known for his positive vibes and funny antics on the hardwood.

After a year with the Spurs, Marjanović bounced around the league, spending the next eight seasons with Detroit, the Clippers, Philadelphia, Dallas, and Houston.

“Boban Marjanović answered the call,” Strong Group posted on its official Facebook page.

“The 7-foot-4 former NBA standout joins Strong Group-Pilipinas as it chases a historic third straight William Jones Cup championship.”

Since making its maiden appearance in the William Jones Cup in 2024, Strong Group has established a dynasty after capturing gold behind stellar performances from former NBA players Dwight Howard and Andre Roberson, bolstered by Kevin Quiambao and Kiefer Ravena.

The squad achieved back-to-back success a year later, finishing the tournament undefeated with a flawless 8–0 record under the mentorship of head coach Charles Tiu.
