BACOLOD CITY — An 85-year-old widow died after a fire engulfed her two-story home in Purok 6, Barangay Talubangi, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on Wednesday night.
Fire Officer 3 Alfie Gravela, arson investigator at the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)–Kabankalan, said they received the alarm at 8:40 p.m.
The victim’s companions, who were on the ground floor, managed to escape.
Gravela said neighbors and relatives attempted to rescue the woman, but the fire quickly intensified and consumed the second floor, which was made of light materials.
“Considering her age, the victim could not walk fast and was trapped, as her bedroom was located on the second floor,” Gravela said.
Firefighters declared the blaze under control shortly before midnight.
The victim’s body was recovered afterward.
The BFP estimated the damage at PHP 450,000.
Gravela said the origin and cause of the fire remain undetermined, pending further investigation.
