The Municipality of Ajuy reaffirmed its commitment to marine conservation through SCUBASURERO 2025, an annual underwater cleanup that brought together 29 divers, local government workers, environmental advocates and community members in a joint effort to protect the marine ecosystem.
Now in its fourth year, the event was held in Barangay Nasidman, home to Ajuy’s oldest marine protected area last May 17, 2025.
SCUBASURERO serves not only as a cleanup initiative but also as a platform for environmental education, community collaboration and regional unity amid growing ecological threats.
“This event is more than just picking up trash — it’s about preserving life beneath the waves,” said Barangay Nasidman Captain May Joy Espiga during the opening program at Nasidman Primary School.
She welcomed guests and participants with heartfelt gratitude and acknowledged their support in preserving Nasidman’s marine environment.
Among the divers and support teams were members of the Iloilo Provincial Capitol’s Fisheries Team, Corazonan Divers, Reef Wanderers, CAPENRO and representatives from the LGUs of Concepcion, Banate, Estancia, Carles, Barotac Viejo and Anilao.
Their presence reflected a shared commitment among neighboring towns to marine protection.
Hon. Loida J. Espinosa, SB member for environment and newly elected mayor of Ajuy, delivered a message highlighting the importance of collaboration.
Espinosa, a long-time supporter of SCUBASURERO, acknowledged Vice Mayor Jett C. Rojas, whose leadership as outgoing mayor helped strengthen the town’s environmental programs.
“The unity we see here today proves we can make a meaningful difference for our environment,” she said.
Ramon Caesar Rojas, LDRRMO III, also addressed the crowd, expressing the town’s appreciation for its partner divers and volunteers.
Mr. Jude Sotomil of the Iloilo Provincial Capitol’s Fisheries Division led a comprehensive dive orientation and safety briefing, outlining key protocols and cleanup goals.
Event coordinator Jay Bee M. Espino, also from the fisheries division, thanked the local government and community for their warm hospitality and meticulous preparations.
“It’s always fulfilling to see so many sectors working together for one purpose — preserving our marine life,” he said.
Following the formal program, divers entered Nasidman’s waters to collect debris from the ocean floor.
After the dive, participants were treated to a hearty lunch prepared by Barangay Nasidman residents under the leadership of Captain Espiga.
A second dive took place in the afternoon, with Mayor Espinosa joining the cleanup herself to show Ajuy’s hands-on leadership in environmental action.
The event ended with a shared sense of accomplishment and a renewed commitment to marine stewardship.
“SCUBASURERO 2025 is a reminder that protecting our oceans is a shared responsibility,” Espino said.
“It’s inspiring to see people from different walks of life come together for a common cause.”
As Ajuy continues to lead coastal conservation efforts, this year’s SCUBASURERO stands as a strong example of how unity and purpose can drive lasting environmental impact.
