An employee of the Sara local government died in a road crash late Thursday night, March 19, in Sara, Iloilo.
The fatality was identified only by the alias Jerico, 27, a resident of Barangay Apologista, Sara.
Police said Jerico died shortly after the collision, which happened around 10:22 p.m. in Barangay Poblacion Ilawod.
Reports said Jerico was driving a Suzuki Burgman 125 motorcycle from the town proper on his way home when the incident happened.
While approaching Barangay Apologista, his motorcycle collided with a Suzuki Smash 110 driven by Albert, 29, a native of Barangay San Juan, Jamindan, Capiz.
Police said Albert, who now lives in Barangay Poblacion Ilawod, Sara, was traveling in the opposite direction when he allegedly encroached on Jerico’s lane.
Investigators said Albert may have miscalculated his speed and overshot into the opposite lane, causing the collision.
Both drivers sustained head injuries in the crash.
Members of the Sara Rescue Team brought them to Sara District Hospital, where Jerico later died.
Lt. Brett Balopiños, deputy chief of the Sara police, said both drivers were not wearing crash helmets when the incident happened.
Balopiños said police are also verifying reports that Albert was reeking of liquor at the time of the crash.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine possible liabilities and the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
